Meet our Relatives - Geirmundsson/Benson Branch

Kristmundur G. Benjamínsson (Benson)

Kristmundur G. Benjamínsson, changed name to Benson in Canada, born April 1, 1840 and died August 25, 1913.

(Updated) FEB 7, 2016: A descendant of Kristmundur and Sigurlaug, in the Seaborn family sent in some updates to this page. One main point missing here, is that Rosa Taylor, John and Elizabeth Taylor's daughter was adopted from Rosa's Biological parents. The story of how our two families were joined at this point by acts of care and kidness, are on Rosa's page. I am sure there are other relatives of my 7 Icelandic Gr Grandparents related to Kristmunder and Sigurlaug.

"The pioneer immigrant ancestors of the Benson family were Kristmundur Benjamínsson and his wife Sigurlaug Bjornsdottir." more pending...

As for the ancestry - it is very easy to trace the ancestry of Sigurlaug, but Kristmundur is a bit harder, although the ancestry  of Kristín Þorleifsdóttir is easily traced. The problems [sic] are Guðmundur Geirmundsson and Agnes Guðmundsdóttir, where  little more than the names of their parents is known., [65]
http://genforum.genealogy.com/iceland/messages/3746.html

"Specifically, Kristmundur Benjamínsson was the son of Benjamín, son of Kristín, daughter of Þorleifur, son of Þorleifur, son  of Þorgrímur Þorleifsson.
That Þorgrímur Þorleifsson was also the father of Magnús, Father of Oddný, mother of Helgi, father of Guðmundur, father  of Kristmundur, father of Guðrún, mother of Helga, mother of Sjöfn, who is my mother." Fridrik Skulason [Friðrik Skúlason of Íslendingabók] , [65]

Can't find a photo of Kristmundur, However, there is a wonderful article by Nelson Gerrard with a photo of his wife Sigurlaug and two of their daughters in Lögberg-Heimskringla Nov 19, 1993, [64]

According to Nelson the names of the daughters in the photo are Ingunn who married Arthur Smith in Los Angeles and Jónína who married Gunnar Alexandersson.

As you see from my search in the Lögberg-Heimskringla their daughter Laufey married a Claude Smith in California. Is Ingunn and Laufey the same person? Is Arthur and Claude the same person?

According to Islendingabok his full name was Kristmundur G. Benjamínsson Benson (born April 1, 1840 and died August 25, 1913). He would have taken up the last name Benson in Canada. There is an obituary for Kristmundur in Lögberg Sept 18, 1913
The obituary mentions that of their 17 children only five daughters and two sons were alive when Kristmundur died, but their names are not listed.

Kristmundur and his wife Sigurlaug Björnsdóttir had 17 children, two of their children emigrated with them in 1874.
The name of the children that emigrated with them: Björn Kristmundsson (born April 6, 1870 died June 29, 1937) and daughter Sigríður Kristmundsdóttir (born August 17, 1873)
Björn Kristmundsson was married to Jóhanna Sigríður Johnson, she died September 23, 1923. Björn had a foster-son by the name of  Edmund Helgason Benson (source: Islendingabok)
|

I found two more of the children of Kristmundur and Sigurlaug in Lögberg-Heimskringla: son Jóhannes and daughter Jónína.

Jóhannes K. Benson lived at Arborg with his wife Jónasína Júlía Benson (he died on June 28, 1958 at the age of 76)
Jóhannes was survived by three daughters, Mrs Frank Rowlin and Mrs. Claude Smith, both in California, and Mrs Valdi Árnason, Gimli, Manitoba, seven grand children and two sisters, Mrs. Gunnar Alexander who lives at Arborg and Mrs. Elizabeth Bell in California.

Jónína and Gunnar took up the last name Alexander. Their son, Jóhannes Gunnar Alexander died at the age of 40 in April, 1958. He was survived by his parentss, his wife Bertha, his foster children and his brother Thomas Alexander at Arborg. Source Lögberg April 17, 1958.

Jónína Alexander died in Gimli on August 6, 1973 at age 82. She was born in Gimli but moved to Arborg in 1901. Gunnar Alexander her husband died in June 1972. She was survived by her son Thomas in Arborg, three of her brother´s daughters: Mrs. Olga Rowlin, and Mrs. Laufey Smith in California and Mrs. Christina Árnason at Gimli. Finally, Sigurlaug had 12 siblings, but most of them died young or childless, with the exception of her sister Marín, who had
one daughter named Ósk, who in turn has three grandchildren alive and a large number of great-grandchildren., [65]

Mary Benson Seaborn
Birth:     Aug. 18, 1872, Iceland
Death:     Jun. 12, 1893
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

The 4th of 16 children born to Kristmundur Benjamínsson (1840–1913) and Sigurlaug Björnsdóttir (1848–1923), Mary was baptized as "Marín Kristmundsson."
When her parent went to Canada in 1874, Mary and her older sister Helga remained in Iceland with family. Older brother
Bjorn and younger sister Sigridur accompanied their parents. (Two older siblings had died in infancy.)
Mary and Helga joined their parents and siblings in Canada in 1883 in the Icelandic farming community at Gimli. In 1891
Mary was listed in the Canadian census as "Minnie Benson," a domestic in Winnipeg.
Mary's surname, and that used by her siblings, evolved from Kristmundsson/Ktistmundsdóttir to their father's surname,
Benjamínsson, to the simplified Benson.

In 1892 Mary married Robert Elgin Seaborn (1868-1946). They were the parents of one child, Robert Thomas Seaborn
(1893-1955). Mary died three months after Robert's birth. The Manitoba Morning Free Press ran the following announcement on Tuesday, June 13, 1893:

Icelandic Connection Uncovered, Part 1 by Guy Scott
Ryan Eyford, a professor of history at the University of Winnipeg takes up the story of the Kristmundur Benjaminsson family
" They decided to give Rannveig up for adoption when she was a few weeks old. They entrusted her to the care of the Icelandic Agent John Taylor and his wife Lizzie. Rannveig was renamed Rosa by the Taylors, who raised her to adulthood. In the May 1879 issue of New Iceland‟s newspaper “Framfari” (Progressive), Kristmundur Benjaminsson publicly thanked the Taylors for adopting his daughter..." , [56]

RESEARCH SEPT 18, 2013 - Incorporated above
The lineage back to Iceland appears to be missing persons. Still, there are three groups of people here with information, which I have gathered to try and make into a cohesive story for our new found cousins. Since I have not verified the information, I will not be notifying the persons at findagrave.

Having trouble with the lineage back to Iceland and will probably ask Frederick Skulason for help as most of this was from a forum he was posting on a couple years ago. He stated that Kristmunders wife's lineage was easy to trace back but not beyond Kristmunder's parents. Now he runs the Icelandic database the kids are now using when dating to see what generation they are related. So he has many trees and been helping on the forum like 10 + years.

Mr. Skulason is one of THE most knowlegable persons I have seen posting on the internet, when it comes to Icelandic family lineage. I will try and make contact with him. All of the data below has been entered into the family database and available as a report.

Descendants of Rosa TAYLOR Banks
The following are from a thread at genforum on Rosa's biological family.
Posted by: Carla Jacobs  JAN 2011 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/iceland/messages/3745.html
"A group of us from Canada and California who are most likely direct descendents of Gudmund Geirmundsson and Kristin
Thorleifsdottir from the Westland are going to Iceland this summer. Their son Benjamin Gudmundsson, farmer at Aegissida
married Agnes Gudmundsdottir. She was his first wife. His son, Kristmundur Benjaminsson, was a pioneer of New Iceland
in Manitoba in 1875 having migrated from Iceland most likely in 1874. I believe he was also Agnes' son but do not know for
sure. He married Sigurlaug Bjornsdottir of Litluborg in Vididal. They were my great grandparents. I am attempting to verify
this lineage for our trip as well as find any relatives who still live in Iceland. Thanks

Kristmundur Benjamínsson (Benson) and Sigurlaug had 5 children in Iceland. One died young, but the other four (Helga [Hega Benjamínsdóttir], Björn [Björn Benjamínsson], Marín [Marín Benjamínsdóttir], and Sigríður [Sigríður Benjamínsdóttir]) emigrated with their parents.

However, before Kristmundur married he had a son here in Iceland, and his descendants would be your closest relatives in
Iceland. The son was Stefán Kristmundsson (b. 1867). He had a daughter, Ástríður [Ástríður Kristmundsdóttir] (1897-
1979), who in turn had a daughter, Margrét, (1922-2004), who in turn had a couple of children and four surviving
grandchildren.

Now, other close relatives in Iceland would be some of the descendants of Kristmundur's sister, Ingibjörg, although most of
them emigrated as well,

Finally, Sigurlaug had 12 siblings, but most of them died young or childless, with the exception of her sister Marín, who had
one daughter named Ósk, who in turn has three grandchildren alive and a large number of great-grandchildren.

As for the ancestry - it is very easy to trace the ancestry of Sigurlaug, but Kristmundur is a bit harder, although the ancestry
of Kristín Þorleifsdóttir is easily traced. The prpblems [sic] are Guðmundur Geirmundsson and Agnes guðmundsdóttir, where
little more than the names of their parents is known.
