Meet our Relatives - Dawe Branch

Thomas Dawe

Thomas 'Tommy' Dawe was born in possibly 1880 in (under construction).
Thomas married Veiga Christopherson, daughter of Sigurdur and Caroline Christopherson on SEPT 28, 1921 in Prince Rupert, B.C., Canada.
We are related through Tommy marrying Veiga.

A relative of Tommy's contacted Roy in AUG 2013. This led to going back and creating this page for Tommy after a year of an initial page done on Veiga. Which actually had incorrect data the whole time. Argh!.
"My grandmother and Tommy Dawe were first cousins. Their mothers were sisters. ...Tommy served in WWI and fought in the trenches. I always thought of him as a gentle man.

"The quality is poor but you can see Veiga and Tom's house in the background. The people in the foreground are, from right to left: Willard Gibson (my grandfather), Helen Gibson DeWolf (my Mom - age 5), Veiga Christopherson Dawe, Nellie Gibson (my grandmother), Sarah Gibson (my great grandmother), unknown, unknown. Perhaps someone else knows the couple on the far left."

There is also a dog in the foreground. Roy adjusted the photo a bit.

"Bruce Costello's Great Uncle Tommy Dawes was a veteran of British Army in the Boer and First World Wars and lastly Montgomery's ADC." Carol Jarvie has a small painting done by Veiga (IMG_5218), along with Veiga's eye glasses and engraved case. She taught at New Westminster.

Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry
The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (DCLI) was an infantry regiment of the British Army from 1881 to 1959. ...The regiment was created on 1 July 1881 as part of the Childers Reforms, by the merger of the 32nd (Cornwall Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot and the 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot.[2] The DCLI also incorporated the militia and rifle volunteers of Cornwall.[3][4][5]

Under the Childers system, one regular battalion of each regiment was to be at a "home" station, while the other was abroad. Every few years, there was to be an exchange of battalions. In the period from the regiment's formation to the outbreak of the Second Boer War the two regular battalions were stationed as follows:

Bruce mentions Boer above. Pending more research...

It should be borne in mind that a man who joined the 46th Regiment; the 35th Brigade; or the DCLI in a particular month or year could have served for many years with another regiment prior to doing so.
